Stuck in the Middle

100_1396 (Custom)1.JPG

Zeke is our middle son, and displays many middle child characteristics. Here is something that happened the other night at a basketball game his father was playing that is so ‘middle child.’

Zeke and Noah were with me, while Elijah was with some other friends. A grown-up had a bag full of Twizzlers that they were sharing with the kids. All the other kids took one, but when Zeke was offered one, he hesitated. The grown-up thought it was because he wasn’t allowed, and told Zeke he’d better ask his mother. I was standing back watching and told Zeke he could go ahead and have one. But that wasn’t the issue. “But I need one for Elijah too.” he said in his sweet little voice, even though Elijah would have been none-the-wiser. Everyone thought it was adorable.

Zeke has this inner sence of justice – everything has to be fair, equal. It’s cute…sometimes.

The Antibiotics Debate

I just had Noah to his pediatrition today. He and I came down with the same cold over the weekend, and my ears are bothering me, so I thought his might be bothering him too. Anyway, the doctor said his ears looked fine, but perscribed him some antibiotics because his cough sounded a “little like bronchitis.” So I had the perscription filled, but I can’t decide whether I should go ahead and start them or not.

Here’s the thing: Elijah and Zeke have both only had antibiotics twice in their whole lives. Not because they were terribly healthier than Noah, but because our family doctor in Canada seemed to never perscribe antibiotics! I remember feeling quite perterbed at him, but now – and I believe the lack of antibiotics has something to do with it – Elijah and Zeke have rock solid immune systems.

This will be Noah’s fourth round of antibiotics. (He had a rough winter. Our friends nicknamed him “The Host” since every virus around found a home in him! Isn’t that sad?!) I hesitate to go “AMA” – I’m not the rebelious type – but I really want him to be able to fight infections on his own, like his brothers do. So…what to do, what to do, what to do.

Ukrainian Egg Widower

I’ve been a Ukrainian egg widower for the past couple days. Janet is an addict. She used to do Ukrainian eggs every Easter until a few years ago (I actually made some eggs with her one year that I was trying to make her like me), and this year she finally got her hands on the dyes and supplies she needed and now she won’t stop! Now I know how she feels when March Madness rolls around each year.

Here’s one she just finished – her best so far I think.

Noah – The Fearless One

Here are a couple things Noah figured out how to do just yesterday. He’s a daring little guy. He went to bed last night with a mark on his chin, nose and forehead and a scratch across his cheek. He’s been walking a lot too. I can’t belive he’ll be a year in two weeks!

On the left: “Is everyone ready for our walk? I am!”
On the right: He heard his brothers outside and just had to have a peek!

Playtime

Sometimes I let Elijah and Zeke dismantle our couch to make a fort. It’s actually a huge sectional, with many removable cushions, so it’s pretty fun. Here is a photo from yesterday.

I find it fascinating that when it comes to make-believe Zeke is the leader. Here’s something I overheard. They play like this all the time. I have to pretend I’m not listening though, because they get embarrassed when they think I’m watching them!

Zeke: And then, how ’bout you say, “It’s time for me to leave Mandigo Guy.”

Elijah: It’s time for me to leave Mandigo Guy.

Zeke: And then you go.

Elijah: Okay

Zeke: And then I say, “Use the tiny door” and then you say, “But there’s hot lava on the other side.

Elijah: There’s hot lava on the other side.

Zeke: Okay. Then I make you go through the tiny door and you do and you get burned in the hot lava. Then you say, “Aaaaaa! I’ll get you for this Mandigo Guy!”

Elijah: Aaaaaa! I’ll get you for this Mandigo Guy!

Mandigo Guy started as a little Lego man and has evolved into a fictional superhero. Well, I mean all superheroes are fictional, but…I mean…Oh, you know what I mean!

A Moment of Peace

Ahhh…a moment of peace. Noah is down for his morning nap and Elijah and Zeke are having their bath. I like doing baths in the morning since it is the only way to tame their wild hair. And maybe I shouldn’t do this, but sometimes I let them play in there for over an hour. They have a blast and it is very relaxing for me.

Anyway, did anyone see the new “Ten Commandments” movie that was on TV last night? It really didn’t tickle my fancy, and I think I like the old one better, but the Holy Spirit really used the ancient truths of that story to speak to me. I am soooo much like the Israelites. After their initial adrenaline rush of physically leaving Egypt, they were so quick to attack Moses. “Where are we going?” “Where will we live ’till we get there?” “We will die in the desert.” “We should have stayed in Egypt. We were slaves, but at least we had homes and food.”

I am going to an inner healing small group with about 5 other ladies, and right now, if I am truthful, I really don’t want to experience inner healing. I would rather remain a slave to the underlying lies I have believed about myself all my life. Why? Because I am comfortable. Really comfortable. I experienced an “adrenaline rush” – if you will – at our last meeting when I shared and received prayer for something (I will share more about this under “about” in the next few days if you’re interested), but now I wonder if I really want to go on this journey. I know there is freedom and the Promised Land on the other side, but…well…I am soooo much like the Israelites! I want to want to though!

Bono and Noah

Has Noah found a friend or is he plugging his ears?

I Love My Shoes

I bought myself some new shoes with my birthday money. Like ‘em?

Jan Shoes.JPG

I really don’t think I’ve felt this way about a pair of shoes since second grade when I got some sweet blue suede sneakers with velcro. I wear them everywhere.

Oh, Elijah!

oh elijah (Custom).jpg
As Elijah emerges from the bathroom at church, he approaches a pretty little girl and proudly says, “Hey, Becky*, I just burped so hard in the bathroom that a little bit of throw-up came up in my mouth. But I swallowed it.” Little girl scowls and Elijah’s mother stands is stunned mortification.

Sing, Spell, Read and Write

100_1319 (Custom).JPG

Sing, Spell, Read and Write is a great curriculum to teach children to read. I used it with Elijah even before he started Kindergarten, and he’s an awesome reader now. His teacher just called me this afternoon and told me that Elijah was reading at a 2.8 grade level and asked if I would like to put him in an accelerated reading program. “Yes,” I said, “that would be wonderful!” Dave and I both felt that Elijah wasn’t being challenged enough in school, so this is exciting!

I’m doing Sing, Spell, Read and Write with Zeke now. Click Zeke singing the Short Vowel song to see him in action. (It’s a 13mb QuickTime movie so grab a snack if you have dial up.)
