Little Angels, You Say?

000_0649 (Custom).jpg

“They were little angels.” “You’re kids are awesome!” “I’d love to babysit again sometime.” As you can imagine, it’s very nice to hear these things from a babysitter when we arrive home from an evening out!

But are you like me? Do you ever think, “Hmmm…little angels? Really? Sure, they’re cute, but I’m not sure I’d use that phrase to describe my children!”

Last night we arrived home from a fantastic, formal Valentine’s Dinner at our church, (oh, it was so much fun to get all jazzed up!) to find our 12-year-old babysitter peacefully playing with the LiteBrite with all three children! The four of them were taking turns putting a peg in. Elijah and Zeke jumped up when they saw us, and excitedly led us to their room, which we discovered had been completely cleaned up! Wow!

So, I’m wondering…”Why is it, that a 12-year-old girl seems to have better control over my kids than even I do sometimes?” I’m sure all you parents out there know the answer to that question, as do I. It embarrasses me to say that I can’t remember the last time I set aside four hours, and just played with my kids! Eeek! My kids are “little angels” for babysitters, because they get 100%, undivided attention from them while they’re here!

Of course, it’s unrealistic for me to do that all the time…where would we get clean underwear, or supper? However, I do need to keep perspective, and remember that it is more than OK to sit down in the middle of a complete mess when Zeke and Noah want me to help them build a traintrack! I’m learning – albeit slowly – but I am learning.

Missing: Our Minivans Back-Window!

000_0796 (Custom).jpgYesterday, while backing out of my parking spot in the parking lot of Zeke’s preschool, the driver directly opposite me was also backing his vehicle out of his parking spot.  The result:  quite a bit of damage done to our minivan, none to his SUV.

It was really a very strange experiance.  I felt a little jolt, and then watched as our back window shattered.  Scary!  Initially, I had no idea what had happened, but as I pulled forward and back into my spot, I realized that I must have backed into another vehicle.

I was shaking when I got out of the van to talk to the other driver, and he was so repentant (especially when he noticed my pregnant belly!)

Long story short, we just simply didn’t see one another.  I noticed that his back window was all mucked up, and mine had been pretty bad too.  We’re both at fault, which means Dave and I will have to pay out-of-pocket for half of the damages (yep…we only have liability).  I was really upset at first, but it could have been so much worse!  It literally makes me shudder to think that either of us could have neglected to see a child walking behind our vehicles.  Wow.  Scary.  Lesson learned…clean back-window.

We Won The Lottery!

Here’s an excerpt taken from a letter we recieved over the weekend…

“Welcome to Hillcrest!  The Hillcrest faculty and staff is honered by the great number of families interested in joining our community.  The great number of applications we receive each year mean we have to have a random drawing for the openings we anticipate, and I am pleased to tell you that your child’s name was drawn!  We are pleased to offer enrollment for your child at Hillcrest for the 2007-2008 school year.  We look forward to being partners with you in your child’s education in kindergarten…”

Whooo-hooo!  This is the school that Elijah is currently attending, and we’re so excited (and relieved!) that Zeke can go there too!

My Little Apple Connoisseur

Apple_sized (Custom).jpg

I like to buy Pink Lady or Braeburn apples. I prefer a crunchy apple. (What’s your favorite apple?) Yesterday, though, I found a good deal on some Cortland apples, so I got a bag.

Today, as Zeke and I settled down to do our while-Noah-is-napping-reading, Zeke had his usual apple in tow. Just as I finished reading the first sentance of The Little Engine That Could (the full legnth version…one of my favorites) he interrupted me by asking,

“Uh, are these Cortland apples?”

“Yeah, Zeke, they are! How could you tell?” I asked.

“Uh…well,” he replied, and then paused in deep thought (as if he were retrieving some very important information!), “they’re soft. Cortland apples are always soft…and, not so crunchy.  I learned that when Aunt Marie took me to the apple orchard in the fall. Did you get these apples from the apple orchard?”

“Well, no, I didn’t, but I’m sure they came from an apple orchard somewhere.”

“Oh. OK. Just…” (he stoped to take a bite of his apple) “…keep reading please.”

Delving Into The Archives

Zeke is going to be the superstar of his preschool class next week! So, I’ve had the very enjoyable task of looking through our immense archive of digital photos, and choosing some to develop to put on the “All About Zeke” poster.

I thought you all might enjoy seeing some of my favorites.

This one is actually pre-digital. (I’m so glad we got a digital camera when we did! We really have so few photos from Zeke’s first year of life…and what we do have are very poor quality.) He’s six weeks old in this picture.

This is one of my all time favorites. Zeke is about 10 months old here.  Cute!

Just a few days before his first birthday (look at those cheeks!)…

About 14 months old…

I think he’s just a little over two in this one. Funny!

Two and a half…

Three and a half.  This one is right after Noah was born.  He and Elijah had just had a good ol’ mud fight!

Feelin' Groovy

Everyone had a peaceful sleep last night; no coughing was heard…yay! I’ve written about this before – about how awesome it feels when everything gets back to normal after having sick shildren – but I think it bears repeating. To me, it serves as a reminder of how truly blessed I am to have happy and healthy children. Praise the Lord! I’m so grateful that everyone has recovered so quickly and easily.

Some other very exciting news…I am once again an aunt! My older brother, Todd, and his wife, Jill (yes, I also have a sister named Jill!) had a baby girl last week! Congratulations, you two! Her name is Emily Faith, and she weighed in at 8″ 7″. I’m so happy for you guys – you’re going to make great parents! Here are a couple photos that we recieved by e-mail over the weekend…

So pink and healthy looking!

And here she is with one of my other nieces, Emma Cormier.  Awww…Emma and Emily, how cute!

I’m not really one to get homesick, but when new little people arrive, I do always feel a pang of sadness that we live so far from my family…(sniff).
