Hi-ho, Hi-ho, Off To The Doctor We Go…

I have a routine visit with my midwife today, Elijah is complaining of yet another sore throat (strep throat has been a reoccurring problem for him this winter), and Zeke woke up yesterday morning with a swollen eye…

Very strange.  We have no idea what it could be…any ideas?   No mosquitoes here yet, and he said it’s not itchy, it just hurts.  Hmmmm…  We’ll see what the doctor says.  At times like this I’m actually glad we pay for health insurance… and for fast and efficient medical care.  I’ve never spent more then a few minutes in a doctor’s waiting room here.  Such a different system than Canada!

"I'm Blogging This"

We’ve been going through a book called Sacred Parenting: How Raising Children Shapes Our Souls by Gary L. Thomas at the mother’s small group that I go to on Wednesday mornings at our church.  This morning’s chapter was a very thought provoking one; touching on the importance of truly enjoying and embracing these years when our children are small.  Which made me think about this blog.

Dave jokes that he wants to get me the t-shirt that says, “I’m Blogging This” (they do actually exist!), a phrase, I suppose, that sort of pokes fun at the quirkiness of a bloggers brain.  And I do believe that we bloggers – well, I won’t point fingers – that I as a blogger, take life in differently.  Since starting this blog (almost a whole year ago now!), I feel that the ability to simply see those small-otherwise-forgotten-moments has been cultivated in me.  It’s really helped me to embrace this very hectic (but wonderful!) time in my life!

So…here’s to the past year of blogging…and hopefully many, many more!

"Must. Get. To. Control. Room."

000_0877 (Custom).jpg

Our big, comfy sectional sofa gets used for a lot of imaginative play in a house full of boys.  It has lots of big, removable cushions that are great for making forts, mountains, landing pads and the like.  Last evening, with said cushions, Zeke went to work and made a pathway to his “control room.”  (It’s the open door you see at the end of our hallway – it’s actually Noah’s room.)  As he hopped from one cushion to the next – being careful, of course, not to touch the floor – he muttered to himself over and over again, “Must. Get. To. Control. Room.”  I interrogated him at great legnth as to what exactly he controlled in this control room, but he was unwilling to divulge this information.  Oh well.  I guess I may never know.

P.S.  Notice the two photo-covered poster boards on the wall in our hallway?  One is Elijah’s Fabulous First Grader project from November, and the other is Zeke’s Superkid project from a few weeks ago.  Coming soon:  Our Terrific Two-Year-Old Project – I’ve decided Noah needs a poster too!  It’s grand unveiling will be at his second birthday party, (hence the title) which is at the end of April.  I’ll begin working on it soon, so look for some fav-photo’s of our sweet baby boy!

The Terrific Twos

000_0865 (Custom).jpg

Noah composed his first real sentence today! “Car-car i’ hou’.” (translation: Car in house.) The car and the house are pictured to the right.

I can’t believe my baby is almost two! I was talking with an older mother the other day about the “terrible twos”, and we both agreed that they shouldn’t be called that at all; they should be called the terrific twos! (I may not have said this five years ago though, when my oldest was two…but I take full responsibility for that!)

It’s fascinating to hear their language skills develop, watch them learn how the world works (and I think this is why we’ve come to think of the twos as terrible – while learning about the world, a two-year-old’s inquisitiveness is mistaken for mischievousness), and see their play evolve into very serious business. For instance, that car was put in that house, stared at, talked about, and then removed way too many times to count, and it was as if he had to do it…he was so focused. What are little people thinking about when they’re doing such things? I’m sure it represents some very important part of brain development, but for me, right now, it’s just really cute!

Greetings From Our Snowfort…

000_0857 (Custom).jpg

Daddy came home a little early this afternoon to help build a snowfort in our abundance of snow.  It was quite an elaborate structure, with a big cave, steps on the outside wall of it, and this photo is of the luge-like tunnel that slides down into the cave.

Snow Day!

Well, for the first time in many years, school has been canceled here in Bloomington, MN! Snow came down steadily all day yesterday, and then well into the evening and night, adding about 14 inches to the foot that was already there.  Here are a few photos of our view…

000_0850 (Custom) (2).jpg  000_0845 (Custom) (2).jpg

On the left: Rich Lang, our trusty snow removal guy, out bright and early clearing off our sidewalks. The right: Our patio. (No, we don’t have evergreens growing on our patio, those are Christmas trees.)

Left: Zeke’s bike. Upside down because they were pretending it was some sort of “contraption” that did something or other. What little boy doesn’t love spinning a bicycle wheel over and over again? Right: Our neighbor’s van. I’m glad we have a garage. (only staff get a garage…there aren’t enough for all the students to have one)

Elijah and Zeke were wild with excitment to get outside. I had to make them slow down and have some breakfast. They’re outside right now digging tunnels, building snowmen, and probably hydrating themselves with handfulls of snow.

Mon P'tit Garcon

000_0839 (Custom).jpg

I love the little corduroy cap that Noah is wearing in this photo.  I purchased it for a quarter at Guy’s Frenchys in Moncton, NB almost five years ago now.  I miss the bargains I used to find at Frenchys…there’s nothin’ like it here!

All of my boys have worn it, and I put it on Noah today, just to wear around the house, (he actually likes wearing hats!) because I think he’s so adorable in it, and he’ll soon outgrow it!  (sniff)  His little jacket is made out of the very same corduroy, and I found it in the Sally Ann (free!) here on campus.  They match perfectly, and everyone asks where I got such a cute ”set.”   (Listen to me…you’d think I was actually fashionable or something!)
