It's TV-Turnoff Week!

 This made me laugh…

I really didn’t like TV-Turnoff Week, except I did notice that my grades went up and I was in a good mood all week. -Drew Henderson, 2nd grader, Donora, Pennsylvania

Our family took part in TV-Turnoff Week last year, and it was a really good experience for us!   When the week was over, we all agreed – yes, even the kids! - that TV-watching really wasn’t that important.

Slowly though, over the winter, shows that we “had” to watch, got added back…funny how that happens.  This year, I’m hoping that we all come to the same conclusions as last year, but even if we don’t, I – as the powerful matriarch…he he! – plan to use this week as a catalyst to cut down on the amount of TV that our family watches, and then be really deliberate about sticking to our “TV Times.”  I certainly don’t think TV is “bad,” but I do beleive that WE should be in control of these moving-picture boxes that are in our homes…and not the other way around!

So, blogging will have to be kept to a minimim this week, as will other unnessesary “computer activities.”  I must confess, that if I sit down to write a post during the day, I usually use TV to distract Zeke and Noah while I’m doing it!  And I wouldn’t want staring at a computer screen to replace staring at a TV screen – that would be silly.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on TV, and/or how your family handles “TV Time.”

hey jan, we don’t watch too much tv and as much as I would sometimes like to put izze in front of it long enough for me to start supper or something he only watches the theme songs and then runs off…but you know what I then do? i leave the tv on in the background and don’t even really think about it. but yesturday the power when out early afternoon and what did Izze do over and over? tried to turn on our tv…as if he missed the out background noise….and here I thought he wasn’t even noticing it. and he was quite annoyed when he couldn’t turn it on. so i’m going to try to be more aware of when the tv is on and off! have fun to gether this week!

I respectfully decline the challenge of no television for a week. I like showering too much.

Now I understand why I am seeing un-showered zombied moms wearing inside-out shirts…

However… computer turn off week… might have something there….

I know Jill, it’s so easy to forget the TV on…that’s just how Elijah was. He didn’t really watch it, but would notice if it was off!

Ah yes, the shower factor! I’ll risk sounding like I’m bragging to say that I’m truly reveling in the stage of life that I’m in right now! Noah still has a 2-3 hour power nap in the afternoon (he’s having one right now!), and Zeke is amazing at entertaining himself. So, I’m not one of those zombied moms out there…in fact, I even had a 30 minute bath in the afternoon the other day! This, I’m sure, will all change shortly…when the baby and summer vacation arrive!

Emily already watches TV to much She will turn her head to see what is on.

Tonight she was on her stomach for about 5 minutes ( the first time she did that) just watching the tube.
