Any Child Psychologists In The House?

24 Aug

Noah has always been a thumb sucker.  He found his thumb shortly after being born, for which I was very thankful!  I had hoped that Phoebe might follow suit, but nothing so far.  Anyway, Noah’s thumb-sucking habit is limited to his bed, and his car seat…and now, since Phoebe’s been born, whenever he’s touching her…

This is such an interesting phenomenon to me (not to mention how very cute it is).  It’s like a reflex; touch Phoebe, insert thumb in mouth.  I wonder what, if any, psychological meaning it has?

Hmmm…that is a very interesting phenomena! I wouldn’t hazard a guess as to what the “psychological” meaning is, but I would guess that it has something to do with feelings of happiness, contentment, or maybe an older brother’s protectiveness!

At any rate, it’s very precious!

Janet! It’s so funny that you bring this up because Abel does something similar and we have often wondered about it. For him, it is anything soft. He could be happily and excitedly walking across a room and if his right hand even brushes something soft, he stops and instantly starts sucking his left thumb. I always thing it is interesting b/c isn’t like he’s tired…it’s almost instinctual. Surely thumb sucking is secure for them and many infants suck in the womb… I often think it is just the most pleasurable thing for them. Maybe connected to nursing as well and what Noah might be remembering…? yeah, so all that to say i don’t have a clue but i do think it is interesting!
