Monthly Archives: March 2009

Before…

It’s been a very  long time since these three have had haircuts.  I can’t even remember when I last tackled those mops of hair.  All three heads have been getting more and more out of control over the past month and now, I’m not really sure where to start.  If I keep up with it on a monthly basis, it’s not so bad but now…well, I think we’re gonna have to return to “ground zero” folks…  Yep, buzz cuts.

I’ve known buzz cuts were the only option for a couple of weeks now – since I stubbornly and sting-ily refuse to pay someone to cut my kids’ hair - but I wanted to wait for the weather to warm up a little.  Like, at least to above freezing.  Dave buzzed his head once in the middle of the winter, and he had to wear a tuque* to keep warm!  So, with a stretch of “warm” (40-50 degree) weather coming next week, Dave and I have agreed to become barbers for a couple of hours sometime tomorrow.  Wow…there’s gonna be a lot of hair on our kitchen floor!  Look for an “after” photo on Monday.

P.S.  Here’s an interesting tidbit of information.  (Well, I find it quite interesting.)  We recently bought a little Macbook (with some proceeds from our tax return.  I love tax return time!) and the iPhoto software on it has face recognition technology.  It can distinguish Elijah and Zeke quite easily, but it’s still figuring out Noah’s face.  Half the time it thinks Noah is Elijah and the other half it thinks he is Zeke.  iPhoto has confirmed what I’ve always maintained:  Noah is quite a perfect hybrid of Elijah and Zeke…or me and Dave.  :-)

Zeke's Pick

Have you read these children’s books yet?  Very entertaining.  For Zeke’s latest school project he had to write a letter to his teacher about one of his favorite books and he choose More Parts by Tedd Arnold.  Don’t let the title of the book turn you off (as it did for me at first), it’s really a great read…

One day I tripped on my red truck
And it just fell apart.
But when I told my mom she said,
“I’ll bet that broke your heart!”

And that’s just the beginning.  Along with believing that his heart may actually get broken, the little boy in the story also fears that something might just ”Crack him up,” or that his friends baby sister may even “Scream her lungs out” sometime.  And why would someone ask him to “Give them a hand?”  …Better glue some gloves on over his hands to make sure they stay on!  Really funny.

Zeke dressed up like the little boy from the story today…

…and was nervously anticipating reading his letter out-loud to his class today too!  It’s going to be video recorded, so hopefully I’ll be able to post a link on here for you to enjoy.

Just Call Me Mischief…Mr. Mischief

Yes, Noah is indeed full of mischief these days.  I think it’s a combination of being bored, testing the limits, (which every true three-year-old should do… at least all mine have), and …well, actually, really, truly being full of mischief.  It’s a good thing he’s cute.  To be sure, though, the cuteness factor has no effect on his siblings.  Only me.  I’m such a softy.

Here he is trying to atone for one of his latest three-year-old stunts; washing off a big circle drawn on our fridge with a pink permanent marker.  In all honesty, I didn’t really care about the artwork (and secretly, I really thought it was quite an excellent circle!) but, to prove a point, I thought he should be made to try to clean it off.

Another thing he’s been doing lately, that I’m not sure what to think or do about, is telling stories.  Long, adventurous tales…starring him.  Just yesterday he tried to convince me that he’d been chased by a skunk to our patio door, and had just managed to get inside before the skunk “stinked him up!”  The earnestness with which he told the story was quite comical and really, I’m torn between letting him use his imagination to create such tales and wondering if it will encourage him to be dishonest.  I just don’t know!  This is something new in my parenting experience.  Any thoughts?

Belated Seventh Birthday Post

Well gee…I forgot that I forgot to do a post in honor of our Zekey’s birthday.  This handsome l’il guy turned seven  at the beginning of January!  Below is a photo of Zeke arriving home from his shoulder-back ride (is that what you’d call that?) from the bus stop, one of our newest birthday traditions.  I wonder how long Daddy will be able to keep that one up?

Quote of the Day

We’ve just finished off The Horse and His Boy, and, with great excitement have started on the last book in The Chronicles of Narnia  series, The Last Battle.  The boys have heard from their babysitter that this is the very best book in the series, so the anticipation has been growing as we read through the first six books!   I’m really looking forward to reading this book as well, in light of our families recent interest in studying the End Times.  I’ve loved so much the unique way that C.S. Lewis brings biblical truths to life in these books, and I’m anxious to peer into his insight on eschatology.

Below is one of my favorite lines from The Horse and His Boy.  Spoken by a talking Horse named Hwin upon her first encounter with Aslan, it so struck me as something that I want  to be able to say.

“Please,” she said, “you’re so beautiful.  You may eat me if you like.  I’d sooner be eaten by you than fed by anyone else.”

…Oh! …To be so fascinated with the Lord and His beauty that every other pleasure in life just seems irrelevant…to have such a revelation of His majesty that for Him to consume my thoughts, my dreams, my time, my everything  is what makes me tick.

P.S.  We’re already discussing what our next series of books will be.  Any suggestions?

A Series of Unfortunate…Uh, Words

If you’ve been reading DJ and the Prophets for a while you might remember this post, my “Series of Unfortunate Events” that happened just about a year ago.  The series of events ended with a rather embarrassing scene at the Bloomington Ice Gardens that involved Noah being carried out against his will screaming, “Me have pee!”  …Oh my.  Too funny.  One of the post’s commenter’s said, “Give it 10 years or so, and I’m sure you’ll giggle.”  Well…it only took a year.

Ok, so, after what happened yesterday, I’m considering avoiding the Bloomington Ice Gardens from now on.  It was again the venue of a rather embarrassing scene; actually, a scene ten times as embarrassing as the one from a year ago.  Mostly because I know (kind of) the people who witnessed it.   Oh dear…

Elijah was invited to a classmates birthday-skating party which was held yesterday at the – you guessed it – Bloomington Ice Gardens.  I dropped him off without incident, helped him lace up his skates and then went of to pick a few things at the grocery store during the party.  I arrived back at the tail end of the party, just as the birthday boy was starting to open his gifts.

The scene was quite calm until the third gift was opened.  It was some sort of Pokemon/Digimon oddity.  Very strange looking in my opinion and Elijah lost no time pontificating:

“Ok…I really don’t like those things!  You know those are just a fad, don’t you?  It’s like…the media tells us what we’re supposed to want!”  I think he was about to launch into why he didn’t like Pokemon, but I managed to catch his eye and subtly stare him down.  (Ok, so it probably wasn’t so subtle. :-) )

The other kids just stared at him blankly and the parents looked kind of puzzled too.  I just stood silently, willing the floor to swallow me up, not exactly sure what to say.  The hostess broke the ice after a few seconds and said with a chuckle, “Well, Elijah, I guess you should be glad you’re not the one getting the presents then.”

I lost no time in skedaddling from that little scene, obviously, and was thankful to be driving back home, where Elijah’s very zealous words about that third birthday present made perfect sense.

So, I guess we can cross “Immunity to the media monster” off of our parenting check list and move on to tactfulness.
