Taking the Mystery out of History… and Geography

It’s hard to believe, but tomorrow will be our last Classical Conversations gathering of the school year.  (Also hard to believe is that my baby boy will be six tomorrow.  SIX.  Ack!  How did this happen?)  We will be having our closing program tomorrow evening, and all the kids will get to show off everything they’ve learned.  I’m excited.

Yesterday, as we were reviewing our geography and history “grammar,” I grinned quietly to myself.  It’s simply astounding how much they’ve learned about these subjects this year.  They’ve far surpassed me!  While I am loving learning everything right along with them, the fact is that I’m just not in the “grammar” stage anymore and memorization doesn’t come as easily to me.  They are able to draw rivers and mountain ranges with precision across the continent of Europe (Europe was our focus this year).  Pin-point European cities and locate tiny countries like Luxembourg, Cyprus and Portugal (which I seriously thought was in South America! *Hangs head in shame*) in a second.

History, though, is my favorite subject.  We’ve memorized 24 history sentences this year and we had fun doing it too! Here is one of their favorite sentences…

World War II. Axis. Ally. I remember learning something about all that in high school.  Probably just enough to pass a multiple choice test!

Another component to their history grammar is all about being able to grasp the scope and sequence of history, from Creation to modern times.  At the beginning of the year, I, grudgingly, purchased this set of history timeline flash cards.  NOT cheap!  BUT…invaluable.  By memorizing 10 cards a week, Elijah and Zeke know 180 events in history… in sequence. I took 30 cards out of the middle of the pack yesterday, shuffled them up and threw then on the floor.  It took them a good 15 minutes…

But they were able to put them in order…

Love it! As a side note, I needed to refer to curriculum guide to check their work. Again, I’ve definitely grown out of the grammar stage! This history grammar, though, is repeated yearly. So I’m hopeful. :-)

Eggs-cellent Part I

Heat up your kistka…

Next, fill the kistka with hot, melted beeswax (which smells so good) and draw a design on your egg…

What ever is covered with the beeswax will stay white.

Then dip your egg in one of the colored dyes and draw more of your design…

Finally, remove all the wax that you’ve applied to your egg by holding it into the candle flame and gently wiping it off with a soft papertowel…

Et voila!…  This one had been dipped several times in yellow, green and red…

P.S.You’ll have to wait to see the kids’.  They’re still working on theirs and want to show off their best ones.

Mighty Machines

We’re in for a treat this summer! (Think positive, right?)  Right outside our front door is where some serious construction has begun…  And will continue for many, many months.  Roads are being torn up, trees uprooted, townhouses torn down and then, finally, some apartment buildings being built.  Exciting stuff.

P.S.  Tune in later this week for some pics of our Ukrainian Eggs.  We’re working on some this afternoon while we talk about the first Passover.  It’s easy to forget this, but I am so incredibly privileged to be able to spend my days with my kids…and teach them and disciple them.  And just love them.

Getting Reacquainted With The Slide

Sitting and sliding down on your bum? (Or rather, “butt,” as my children insist it is called.)  That’s for amateurs.

From August 2007

More good memories…

Soundbites and Snapshots from Summer Vacation 2007

Hope these little excerpts from our vacation will bring a smile to your face, as they did mine…

‘Bite #1: Me-me too!  Me-me too! – Noah.  Noah’s mandate right now in life:  Do whatever his brothers do.

Elijah and Zeke slept in the bed over the cab, and Noah slept down on the little “table bed.”  There would have been room for him to sleep up with Elijah and Zeke, but we didn’t think it was good idea.  Our doubts were confirmed when he feel out of bed on the first night, and just about every other night as well!  They had fun up there together during the day though.  I love this picture…

‘Bite #2:  No, actually that wasn’t a tee-pee, it was a wig-wam.  Tee-pees were made out of furs and animal hides, and wig-wams were made out of birch bark, like the ones we saw.  Wig-wams were more of a permanent structure, and tee-pees were more portable… – Elijah, to some fellow visitors at Fort Williams Historical Park,* when he overheard them talking about the “tee-pees.”  I still haven’t figured out what to do with my little walking encyclopedia in situations like this.  Should I tell him to be quite and mind his own business, or just pretend I don’t know him?

Zeke being thrown in the air by Daddy in the pool.  Look how high he is!

‘Bite #3:  Waaaa-haa!  Noah ate one of my Shreddies! (loud wailing for about twenty seconds) Noah ate one of my Shreddies…and I’m NOT tired! – Zeke, near the end of our camping adventure.  He was tired…as we all were!

Noah, throwing stones in the little fishing pond at our second campground.  One morning, the boys caught seven little fish in it.

The inevitable flaming marshmellow…

‘Bite #4:  Ahh-goo! - Phoebe.  My interpretation:  I’m a “happy camper!”  (I know, I know…corny, but I couldn’t help it.)

*Fort Williams was the North West Company’s inland headquaters from 1803 – 1821.  Today, it’s  a living history program (kind of like a big museum, with people dressed and acting like people from that time period).  The North West Company was a rival to the Hudson Bay Company in the fur trading business.  The Hudson Bay Company, as we know, eventually won the battle.  Elijah said the historical park was his favorite part of the vacation.  (Zeke, on the other hand, said the tim-bits were his favorite part.) It was really cool…a very effective way to learn about history.

The Children Have Come Out of the Woodwork

Yay! It’s spring!  Children, children everywhere.  And what would these children be using the wonderful, warm, sunny rays for?

They may or may not have a magnifying glass…and they may or may not be trying to ignite a dry leaf with it. Hmmm…  Yeah, I think that’s what they’re doing.  Don’t worry, though.  I confiscated the magnifying glass shortly after I took this picture. :-)
