About Janet

Wife to Dave, Mother to five. Learning to homeschool and find time to breathe in Life.

Well, well, well. Last week kind of got away from me, now, didn’t it? Is it just me, or does it seem to take twice as long to recover from vacation than it does to actually go on vacation?

It’s probably just me. That weeks worth of laundry almost got the best of me.

But, I survived

Anyways…here are some highlights from our camping adventure…

Hanging out at the pool.

Visiting the petting zoo on the way back from the pool.

Campfires, of course.

And when the bugs got too bad during the campfire for the girls, cuddling together in a sleeping bag while watching a movie.

And then the boys piled in. (Noah was asleep in less than 1 minute.)

Eating outside. (I set up this shot…’cause the photographer never gets to be in any shots! :-) I guess everyone looks kind of stunned. He he.)

Watermelon! I love the juicy droplet in this picture.

Swinging.
And most of all? Never knowing what time it was!

Back From Vacation

Hi! This is where we lived this past week…

In a camper loaned to us by some very generous friends. So much fun! I’ll be sharing some of our favorite memories and photos next week. But, for now? Laundry…

A-a-a-hem!

Earlier this summer, for about a span of two weeks, I kept asking Elijah if he had a cold.

“Um…I don’t think so,” he’d say.

And then, someone asked me, “Is Elijah’s voice changing?!”

“What?!” I said, “I don’t think so, I think he just has a cold.”

But they were right, of course, unless he’s had a cold for the last two months, and Elijah has a rock-solid immune system, so that’s unlikely.

They saw what I didn’t want to see: My baby boy – little Eli-guy – is on the threshold of becoming a man. Can you believe it?

And the crackily, hi-low voice? It’s really cute!

P.S. This pic makes me laugh… Hmmm, maybe that’s a little too high, Elijah?

Race to the Lake

I am a true mid-westerner now. I mean, you can call a lakefront, surrounded by gritty sand, a beach, right? I grew up minutes from beautiful Kelly’s Beach in Kouchibouguac, (Whatever spellcheck, I’ve known how to spell Kouchibouguac since I was five!) New Brunswick, Canada. The Atlantic Ocean people! So, using the word “beach” to refer to a lake is a bit of a stretch for me…but, well…I surrender. When it’s over 100 degrees with tropical humidity the “beach” is a lovely place to be. I even swim in it. Kind of.

The boys have done swimming lessons at the lake each evening for the past two weeks. Lots of fun and they’ve learned so much!

My Tom-Boyish Girly Girl

I love that Phoebe likes to don a ball cap and cheer on her brothers as they play football…

(On this particular day she’s a Vikings fan, I guess. :-) )

…And I also love that she likes to dress up like a princess and practice twirling…

The Mad Scientist…

…And the experiment gone awry.

Seriously, you should have seen the laboratory (a.k.a. my bathroom). Water and suds everywhere! Grrr…

Triathlon 4 Orphans Part II

This morning, at about 10:05, I almost got a perfect shot of Dave crossing the finish line of the Minneapolis Triathlon 2011…

I had a beautifully clear shot, turned away for a minute, and all of a sudden the announcement, “Dave Horsman, from Bloomington,” – 10 minutes before I expected it! – had me scurrying to compose a shot of the finish line, and the lovely gentlemen on the righthand side of the frame. Bummer.

Oh well. I guess the camera mounted on the ladder there, was getting a photo of each athlete as they finished. Hopefully we can get one of Dave.

Anyhow…

Dave finished the race!  In just under an hour and 45 minutes too. His time for the swim was 16:09 (his goal was 20 min), the bike, 52:06 (his goal was 1 hour) and he narrowly missed his goal for the run by just a minute and 22 seconds, doing it in 31:22. Wow!  Here he is just seconds after crossing the finish line, rehydrating and feeling grrreat!

You’ll notice the word LIFE embroidered on his headband. (You might be familiar with The Silent Siege?) We believe in LIFE for every unborn child, and to us, adoption is the logical solution to the ending of abortion here in America. We’re at a crucial time in history. The Church, in particular, has the opportunity to rise up and essentially say, “We want the unwanted.”

I’m going to be bold and say that every Christian couple/family should prayerfully consider adoption.

And if you’re unable to adopt, then prayerfully consider helping adoptive couples/families. Give financially! You can still donate to Olive Tree Adoptions and help Dave reach his $5000 goal by going here.

‘Nuff said.

Way to go Dave. You’re our hero!

BBFL

The Bethany Brothers Football League

I love being able to look out my patio door and see a bunch of boys playing a game of pick-up football. (If you look closely at the first photo, you can see our apartment in the background with flowers still stuck on the living room windows, leftover from Phoebe’s birthday party.)

Many hours so far this summer have been spent in fierce competition between all these brothers. For the most part they’re really all quite mature about handling defeat, although, occasionally an impending loss causes one team to storm off. It’s kinda fun to be an observer and just be able to watch kids handle conflict. In my opinion, it’s really good for them.  I definitly lean more towards the “disorganized” side of childhood. I think nowadays kids are in too many organized activities and they aren’t able to have squabbles, and disagreements; they never get a chance to figure out “real life.” I’m immensely grateful to be living in a community where all this can happen!
