All about Zeke

Weathering and Erosion

The boys have been studying weathering and erosion in science recently. This was a fun little experiment in which they observed and recorded the effects of glacial erosion.  Very interesting, I must say.  Honestly, I’ve learned almost as much as they have this past year.

And while I’m on the topic of weathering and erosion… I feel weathered. Beaten down.  Tired.  This year has had it’s ups and downs, but it’s been a pretty good experience for the most part, I think.  These days, though, I’ve been feeling, for the first time, like I just want to quit.  Probably a good thing that this is happening with only three weeks left until our summer holidays begin.  Oh boy, I am so ready for summer holidays!  Wahoo!

Mr. Comfy-Womfy

IMG_6337 (Custom) (2)Behold Zeke’s favorite jeans.  I think he’s worn them every other day for the last year and a half.  Zeke has an aversion to zippers and buttons, so when he pulled these elastic-waistbanded-beauties out of a bag of hand-me-downs last year he claimed them right away and they’ve been his “comf-jeans” ever since.  They’ve been in my path of destruction for quite some time but Zeke’s (somewhat unusual) attachment to them has stopped me…  I mean, what’s a Mom to do?

We’ve recently, though, turned the “comf-jeans” into a sweet pair o’ “comf-shorts” after much diliberation on Zeke’s part.  He finally decided that he’d like to be able to wear them every other day in the summer too.

P.S.  I love how Zeke marches to the beat of his own drum…notice his Green Bay Packers t-shirt.  He wears it proudly in Vikingsville.

Better Than a Gerbil

The present Zeke bought himself with his birthday money came in the mail this week…IMG_4509 (Custom)

He bought himself a used, but in pretty much perfect condition, iPod Nano.  Isn’t that astounding?  My eight year old had enough birthday money to buy himself a tiny device that can hold thousands of songs…oh, and movies too (not that he’s allowed to watch said movies whenever he wants, of course).  I had some reservations, but really, I was relieved when he switched his focus from begging and pleading to buy a pet gerbil to wanting the Nano.  I guess right now in life I’d much rather have a tiny music player than a smelly rodent in my house.  :-)

A Birthday, An Anniversary And A Clue

Here’s a little of what’s been happening around here lately…

Our Sweet P Turned two on June 11th.  We had a delightful little party out on our front lawn with all of our “campus family” for her special day.  Phoebe was so tickled about the whole thing!  It was really adorable.  Dave made a little video encapsulating the whole day…

(It took my sister in Toronto watching this video for me to realize that Phoebe uses her left hand a lot. I’m tentatively excited! I so want to have a “south paw!”)

Another exciting event: Dave and I celebrated our 11th aniversary on the 12th. We even got to get away overnight thanks to Naomi, who bravely stayed overnight with our kids. Thanks Naomi! The kids have been saying they want to see you again soon. :-)

And here’s a little picture riddle for you to figure out.  Friday morning was spent at a table outside playing with some playdough that Phoebe got for her birthday.  Can you guess what these two playdough figures, one made by Elijah, the other by Zeke, were all about?

Last Day Of School

Today was the boys’ last day of school.  Unbelievable, isn’t it, that a whole school year has passed?  I’m flabbergasted.

That phrase, “the last day of school,” has a double meaning for our family today.  Not only is today Elijah and Zeke’s last day of school for this year, this is also their last day of public  school for… a while.

Yes, we’ve decided it is time to take a huge leap of faith and start homeschooling our children this coming fall.  I know, crazy eh?  To be honest, the thoughts, emotions and convictions that have lead us to this decision are many and they are turbulent.  I’m still sorting through all of them!  To echo the ladies with whom I met this past Friday night about starting a homeschooling co-op, “We have more questions than we have answers.”  But for now I will just say that I am quite convinced that there really is no other place where I should be channeling my energies right now.

(to be continued…)

Farewell To Inchy And Hello To Wrist Splint

Pictured above, Zeke’s pet for a day, Inchy, was pretty much the highlight of our Memorial Day.  (Well, besides Noah being diagnosed with a fractured wrist…I’ll get to that story in a bit.)  Zeke fell in love with this little guy, kept him in a plastic cup all night beside his bed and woke up this morning asking if we might get a more suitable habitat for him.  I thought I’d oblige since the kids can’t really have any other kind of pet in these apartments (well, there’s fish…but we’ve been there, done that already).  So, shortly after Elijah and Zeke left for school, Noah, Phoebe and I took off for Target in search of a bug container of sorts.  Inchy was left in the plastic cup, which was deemed to be a safe place to leave him for a bit, since he had yet to attempt an escape.  But alas, with no big, scary humans in sight, it seems he decided to make a break for it and upon our return home he was gone…gone, baby, gone.  So sad.  Zeke’s been out looking for a replacement Inchy all evening.

And yes, if you haven’t already heard, my baby boy has a fractured wrist!  To be honest, I’ve always figured this day would eventually come, the way this kid plays.  He never slows down and lacks any kind of healthy fear of anything.  Add to this that he’s incredibly tough, and seems to have a super-high tolerance for pain, and it’s a recipe for disaster!

But anyway, here’s the story…

I was at a park alone with all four kids on Saturday evening.  (I know, I’m crazy…but Dave had been out of town since Thursday morning, and I guess I just wanted a change of scenery…and it was a gorgeous night.)  Everything was going great.  Elijah and Zeke were playing some kind of chase game, ie: wearing themselves out :-) , Phoebe was all over the twirly slide and Noah, in his usual, outgoing way, had befriended a little girl.  (Interestingly he gets along amazingly well with 5-6 year old girls.  My theory is is that little girls this age are bossy and Noah doesn’t mind being bossed.  Hee hee.)

But then Noah got it into his head that he had to conquer the monkey bars.  Very high  monkey bars.  I asked him to please stay off of these ones as I needed to stay close to Phoebe and wouldn’t be able to help him.  But…well, he didn’t listen.  With one hand on the first monkey bar, he lost his balance and fell from the four foot platform while reaching for the second monkey bar and landed squarely on his outstretched hand.  He did cry pretty hard at first, but only for a few minutes… and then went right back to playing!  He favored it a bit throughout the evening, but when he fell sound asleep shortly after we arrived home, I thought it couldn’t be hurting enough for it to be badly hurt.  There wasn’t any swelling either, and I always thought that that would accompany a serious injury.

The next day, Sunday, though, I began to suspect that something was wrong when he continued to favor it and also when he seemed to “re-injure” it several times by doing something that normally wouldn’t hurt a wrist.  Daddy arrived home just before supper on Sunday (Hurrah!) and he agreed that the first order of business for Memorial Day would be to bring Noah to an Urgent Care.

So that’s what was done, the resulting x-ray showed a couple of fractures on his right wrist and the the Urgent Care Dr. fitted Noah with a splint until we could get an appointment with an orthopedic specialist.

And so ends the story of Noah and the Horsman family’s first broken bone.  Hopefully this will be the last too, but something tells me that we’re really just at the tip of the iceberg of “bringing up boys.”  …Totally worth it though.  I love my boys.

Recovering…

All is well here in Horsmanville, in case you’re wondering.  We had a great spring break full of good times.  Some highlights were:  tuning into the world curling competition via the Internet, the attempted rescue of Bob the Gopher – he was later pronounced dead though :-( – “shooting hoops” and …an ongoing fued over which older brother was Noah’s best friend.  Noah would flip-flop between the two, one minute declaring Elijah to be his BFF and then later Zeke.  Sounds annoying maybe, but actually, it was cute.  I’m so looking forward to summer vacation!  Noah plays so much better when his brothers are here.

Right now, though, I’m kind of in recovery mode.  I, too, kind of took a spring break and ignored housework, laundry and such while the boys were home.  In fact this morning I finally got around to folding almost a dozen loads of laundry that had been lying heaped in a pile since the day before spring break even started!  Yikes.  Now… to put them all where they belong…
